A Special Day Out for Ed & Christine – Steam Trains and Sweet Memories 🚂🍰

At Kirby Grange Residential Care Home, two very special residents recently enjoyed a day they’ll never forget, thanks to a heart-warming nomination from Deputy Manager, Sarah, and the support of Pollard’s Promises.

Ed and Christine, brother and sister, have both been living at Kirby Grange, Ed for the past year and Christine more recently. Despite the years apart while Ed lived in America, their bond has remained incredibly strong. Now both living with dementia, the pair find great joy in spending time together and sharing experiences that remind them of their childhood.

Knowing Ed’s lifelong love for trains and their shared family history, their father worked on the railways, Sarah nominated the pair for a special treat: afternoon tea for four aboard the Great Central Railway steam train.

On the day of their trip, Ed and Christine took a taxi to the station in Loughborough and boarded a vintage steam train. As the countryside passed by their window, they were served a delicious spread of sandwiches, cakes, scones, and tea. The journey sparked warm conversation and memories, especially around their father’s work and their love for trains growing up.

“We spoke about their interests in trains and how they grew up around them. This was a really good trip for both residents. It gave them time to reminisce and enjoy themselves. They both really enjoyed their day out and had such an amazing time. Thank you again for making this happen.”

We're so pleased Ed and Christine were able to share such a meaningful and joyful day together — a reminder of the power of memory, connection and a little bit of adventure.
